Sebastian Haug

Sebastian Haug is a Senior Researcher and Project Lead at the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and a Senior Fellow at the University of Bonn. He serves as a principal investigator of the "China’s attractiveness in the Global South" project (2026-2029) and has more than 10 years of experience researching international cooperation, multilateral organisations and China’s global role.

 Sebastian is the lead editor of “Power shifts in international organisations: China at the United Nations” (2024) and “The ‘Global South’ in the study of world politics” (2021). His work has been published in outlets such as International Affairs, International Studies Perspectives, Global Policy and Review of International Political Economy. Funding for his research has been provided by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Germany’s Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), among others. He is a recipient of the University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor’s Award and, in 2025, was awarded the International Affairs Early Career Prize. 

 Sebastian used to work for the United Nations in China and Mexico, and has held visiting positions at New York University, the Istanbul Policy Center and the College of Mexico. He has testified before the Bundestag Subcommittee on International Order, the United Nations and International Organisations and regularly advises governments and international bodies, including the United Nations and the European Union, on multilateral reform and China's international cooperation. Sebastian serves on the editorial board of Third World Quarterly and, in 2024, was appointed to the advisory board of the United Nations’ Global Report on South-South and Triangular Cooperation. 

 Sebastian holds a Master's degree from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.
